Behind-the-scenes work at Circuit of the America for 2016 Le Mans. Lone Star Le Mans, COTA’s twist on the world’s greatest endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will take place once again at COTA in Austin, Texas, from Thursday, September 15 to Saturday, September 17. The three-day event will culminate with almost nine hours of racing and entertainment, including its only night race to finish under the stars, topped off with a dazzling fireworks show presented by Texas Lottery.

(UPDATED THURSDAY, OCT. 13)

It’s early and things can change, but the long-range weather forecast for Formula One weekend at Circuit of the Americas is immaculate.

Sunny, with high temperatures in the upper 70s or low 80s.

Race weekend is Oct. 21-23.

We’re going to pay extra close attention to the weather this year after the calamity caused last year by tropical rainstorms and quagmires at the Southeast Travis County motor sports and entertainment complex.

“Right now, the Oct. 21-23 weekend looks to have great weather,” said Michael Lyttle of the Travis County Severe Weather group (@TravisCOSW on Twitter).

“Expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching the low-to-mid 80s during the day. Mid-to-upper 60s during the night. No rain forecast … at this time.”

(Full disclosure: Michael is my brother and an extremely knowledgeable weather source, as are his certified spotters at @TravisCOSW. I come from a family of weather geeks, only I didn’t catch the fever like Michael and Steve. My brother Steve has written about weather in the Carolinas since 1998 and was a member of the American Meteorological Society from 2008-14, when he retired from the Charlotte Observer. My brother Don, incidentally, nearly had his house float away in Florence, S.C., last weekend because of Hurricane Matthew.)

But back to the topic at hand: the upcoming weather for Central Texas and how it relates to our big race weekend.

“We have a weak front which rolled through Thursday into Friday,” Michael Lyttle said. “Temps will moderate slightly but will return to summer-like conditions next week.”

Indeed, the forecast calls for highs in the low-90s from this Sunday through next Tuesday when out-of-towners start arriving.

“It appears a stronger front will roll through here next Wednesday or Thursday, and it may have some rain with it,” Michael Lyttle said. “That will knock the temps down. After that, next Friday high pressure builds into the weekend, which leads us to expect nice weather for the racing and other entertainment out at the track.”
