Circuit of the Americas has been named one of the 100 most important works of architecture in the United States, according to the influential architectural online publication Archdaily.com.

COTA is featured in a special new “Top 100” section of ArchDaily, which includes urban and rural structures from coast to coast.

Austin-based Miró Rivera Architects are the designers of the signature buildings at the Circuit of the Americas, the world-class motorsports facility and entertainment complex in Southeast Austin.
COTA is the only Formula One track in the country, and the 3.4-mile layout handles multiple forms of racing.

The architectural features of the five-year-old venue include a 251-foot tall Observation Tower and the Austin360 Amphitheater, which serves as a memorable backdrop for the Circuit’s Grand Plaza.

The 27-acre plaza, bordered by the track on three sides, is situated in the heart of the race course and defines the public experience of the complex for most users entering the venue. The main grandstands, which border the front straight of the track, were also designed by Miró Rivera.

ArchDaily writes of COTA:

“The main architectural language of the facility evokes the precision, dynamism and performance-driven design of race cars. It is also visually stimulating, incorporating banners, billboards, and bold graphics. The architects bring their innovative approach to the structural systems; rather than being concealed behind a building’s facade, they are articulated and become significant parts of the design.

“An architectural theme reoccurring throughout the site is the use of red steel tubes. The tubes cascade down the side of the Observation Tower to form a canopy for the Amphitheater stage and also frame the Main Grandstand. Evocative of sports cars and movement, this element ties the structures together creating a consistent visual experience.”

COTA chairman Bobby Epstein was flattered by the designation.

“It’s an honor for Circuit of the Americas to be recognized among the top-100 architectural achievements in the country and a tribute to the vision of the designers and architects,” he said. “The goal was to create something very progressive and ‘cutting edge,’ while still being functional and aesthetically pleasing.”
