The 2017 United States Grand Prix weekend at Circuit of the Americas has gained a new supporting event.
The Formula 4 United States series will make a stop in Austin during the Formula One stay Oct. 20-22. It will be the seventh and concluding event of the season for the U.S. brand of F4.
COTA already had its most ambitious racing schedule, and now it will grow a little more.
The F4 competition will include one practice, one qualifying session and two races to be held between F1 practice and qualifying sessions Friday and Saturday, according to the F4 series website.
Formula 4 U.S. cars have never been paired with F1 during a race weekend, so this is a breakthrough for the SCCA Pro national series. At the upper level is an FIA F4 series with events around the world.
“The addition of the F4 U.S. Championship to the U.S. Grand Prix weekend signifies our place as one of the primary destinations for young drivers who have karting or other racing experience and wish to refine those skills,” SCCA Pro Racing Vice President Steve Oseth told the website.
The U.S. series is in its second season. Oseth said 35 cars are expected to compete in Austin.
F4 U.S. had planned to end its season during the FIA World Endurance Championship at COTA on Sept. 15-16. That race will stay on the schedule and now be a dress rehearsal for the season championship in October.
F4 U.S. cars are powered by the Honda Civic Type-R engine, detuned to meet F4 specifications.
