Circuit of the Americas is open for business for 2017.

Saturday (today) the fifth annual F1 in Schools Challenge (F1iS) is taking place at the huge racing complex in southeast Travis County.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., introduces high school students to the engineering process and behind-the-scenes activity that leads up to a race weekend. Students learn about everything from business planning, to design, to manufacturing, to analyzing, to marketing and, finally, to the racing itself. Students are participating in a hands-on kind of way.

Student teams have three to six members, and the competition involves not only racing the cars but also verbal presentation and an engineering interview, along with marketing and sponsorships in their portfolio and pit displays.

The winners from this region move on to the 2017 F1iS U.S. Nationals at Circuit of the Americas in June.
